Cape Cod’s newest Gallery and home to Scrimshaw artist Nancy Lyon.
Renowned scrimshaw artist Nancy Lyon has expanded and moved her retail business from the artists shanties at Bismore Park to a new location on Main St. in Hyannis. For Nancy it’s a kind of homecoming, as her first commercial scrimshaw work was done at Peter’s Bazaar on Main St. in Hyannis 30 years ago. Nancy opened the Black Whale Gallery at 349 Main St. in Hyannis on Thanksgiving weekend 2009.
The gallery carries Nancy’s scrimshaw, etchings, note cards, and painting work. She also features an eclectic collection of work from other local artists. Fine photography from Roberta Anslow (another shanty artist) and Amy Addison is featured. She also has a line of Nantucket baskets handcrafted by Larry Brewster (member of Nantucket Basket Makers Assoc.) and Janice Card. Sailors valentines created by Gail Condit add another nautical touch to the gallery. Pewter jewelry crafted by Wellfleet artist Jeff Mitchell and beautiful stained glass by Provincetown artist Chris Pearson brighten up the shop. Another shanty artist, Christine Esperson, has a line of her pottery in the gallery along with some fine silver, stone, and beaded jewelry by Tristine Herb.
The gallery carries its own line of handmade soaps and gift baskets. Anyone that appreciates the artistry of our incredibly talented local artists will find something for their taste at the Black Whale Gallery.
The gallery is located at 349 Main St. in Hyannis right next to Le Petite France bakery and across the street from Alberto’s restaurant. The phone number is 508-771-8600 and the shop will be open every day Mondays through Saturdays. Normal hours are 10-5 with evening hours during the Summer season. If you’re looking for unique gifts for special people, the Black Whale Gallery has something for you!
